The First Female to graduate with a pharmacy degree in the United States: Advocator for females in a male dominated profession Mary Putnam Jacobi was a British-born American physician and suffragist who campaigned for women’s rights to education. Jacobi was a student of Elizabeth Blackwell, the first woman to earn a medical degree in the United States. Unlike her early mentor, who viewed medicine as an extension of feminine nurturing, Jacobi felt that female doctors were no less competent than male doctors. Jacobi was the first woman to graduate with a pharmacy degree in the United States, an early graduate of the Female Medical College of Pennsylvania, and the first woman to study at the Ecole de Medicine in Paris. Upon her return to the United States, she opened a private practice and lectured at a women’s medical college while continuing to petition for the right for women to enter prominent male-only medical schools. She conducted ground-breaking research disproving menstrual cycle myths, including challenging the belief that exercise during menstruation caused infertility.
